Press Release Summary = Tons of male prison inmates were moved by a book called Thongs & Bra Straps. This autobiography by Dr. Angela Isom, initially labeled as a \"book for women\", has crossed gender and racial boundaries.
Press Release Body = Four years ago, Dr. Angela Isom finally did it; she wrote an autobiography and called it Thongs & Bra Straps. The controversial title combined with the controversial content has attracted readers of all races, ages, social classes, and genders.
Isom says she has experienced many surprises since the book was published. For example, women worldwide have responded favorably to the book. However, the biggest surprise was learning that-men in prison love Thongs & Bra Straps. The men in one correctional institution have thoroughly dissected and studied the book as a text for their bible study. Isom was bursting-with tears and joy-when she heard the news. Dozens of men have shared how the book impacted their lives.
Dr. Isom moved away from her parents as a teen. In fact, she was born to teen parents. As a teen, Isom lived with an abusive drug addicted boyfriend. She spent a lot of time hungry. They were usually on the verge of being homeless. This was compounded by the fact that her father was incarcerated and drug addicted. Despite all of these barriers, she eventually returned to high school. She went from straight F\'s to straight A\'s. Some of this she accredits to her court appointed social worker. She received several college scholarships, so many that she had enough money left over to pay her rent part of the year. Isom eventually left her middle school sweetheart. Later along her journey, she became a single mom. She went to get on welfare to make ends meet. For a portion of her pregnancy, her son\'s father wouldn\'t speak to her until God changed his heart. She didn\'t let any of this stop her. By age 22, she was in grad school at Case Western Reserve University. She also founded a nonprofit organization that resulted in multiple television appearances and a newspaper front page. By the time she was 24, she was teaching college courses. By the time she was 25, she was taking classes at Harvard. When she turned 28, she became senior professor. She is now 32 years old and has accomplished much in the last 4 years such as: writing and self-publishing a successful autobiography, meeting the U.S. President in person for writing outstanding community youth programs, earning a doctorate degree, and receiving some of the country\'s most competitive grants. According to Dr. Isom, she hasn't even begun yet.
Dr. Isom says, "I would like to thank the men at RCI for taking the time to inform me that my story has helped them because they have helped me too!"
